David Cronenberg: Transformation at MOCCA

Your Name and Student Number: Rawaa Bakhsh - 2450500

Event/Activity: David Cronenberg: Transformation at MOCCA

Date and Time: October 2013
Short Description:
So I went twice to the exhibit. Once by chance before knowing it was required, I stopped for 15 minutes as I walked along Queen west. At that time I had no idea who Cronenberg, Brietz, or any of them were. And I have to say I did not get much out of it. After getting exposed to everyone this semester, I took a fried and went back to it and the amount of things I got out of it is massive.

Event/Activity Effects, Impacts, Inspiration! (point form précis)
1) I was impressed by how one person as a start point can produce such different art.
2) how different each artist represented cronenbergs work.
3) how creative Candice is even when commissioned to work with something that is assigned to her, and how it relates to her other work.
4) how important Cronenburg is and how little I know about his accomplishments.

Direct Outcomes of this Event/Activity (point form précis)
Looking deeply at different ways multiple artists can deal with one topic. Like cronenburgs work.
Researching and googling everything you don’t know or understand, the power of having all the info you need right t your fingertips.
How reproductions of work can vary, from one artist to the other.

David Bowie

Your Name and Student Number: Rawaa Bakhsh - 2450500

Event/Activity: David Bowie is

Date and Time: Nov 1st 2013

Short Description:
A Massive exhibit, I only wished I loved David Bowie or knew who he was before I went to this exhibit, I can totally see how people who love his work would enjoy this show, it felt like going to a concert or a museum dedicated to him. I found that too many things were forced in. and were not necessary at all. The only thing missing was his underwear.. such an “in your face show” I went in with a mind set on noticing collaboration in making this show, but all I came out of is how massive bowie is. MASSIVE.. show that highlighted no one but him.. to much content to digest in one visit.

Event/Activity Effects, Impacts, Inspiration! (point form précis)
1) how pop culture and music are important in making idols that are worthy of such huge exhibits
2) how little I know about the 70’s!
3) even books he was inspired by or maybe existed in his library by chance were hanging from the ceiling.
4) never throw away anything, who knows.. it might be worth of displaying in a glass box one day.

Direct Outcomes of this Event/Activity (point form précis)
It was too full, to loud and to chaotic. At some point I felt like I just wanted to leave.
I wished it was more focused and toned down a notch.
I still wonder why its at the AGO. And I question the decision on taking it to canada and the
AGO.
Toronto needs a design museum.

Ai WeiWei

Your Name and Student Number: Rawaa Bakhsh - 2450500

Event/Activity: Ai Weiwei: According to what? AGO

Date and Time: Sep 7h 2013

Short Description:
Being In Toronto and experiencing the Ai Weiwei exhibit as it tours north America for the first time is a great opportunity, many artworks of his were displayed at the Ago. They were stuffed in a small space, but I am pleased with the selection of work that got displayed.

Event/Activity Effects, Impacts, Inspiration! (point form précis)
1) witnessing one of the worlds most controversial artist’s work is a great pleasure.
2) I was impressed by how similar yet different his work is, how much multiples, geometry and repetition was involved
3) he deals with a government quite like my own. And his creative ways in displaying his controversial pieces despite his location and situation.
4) he is in Canada, even though he is on house arrest. That how powerful an artistic presence is.
5) everything is well informed and has an amazing back story.

Direct Outcomes of this Event/Activity (point form précis)
I am impressed by his ability to make artwork that speaks about a country and population and government though objects the way he does, the school children and the density vases are amongst my absolute favorites.
I love how he questions tradition by breaking the vases and making that one of the most controversial art pieces that deal with the worlds largest nation.

Candice Breitz

Your Name and Student Number: Rawaa Bakhsh - 2450500

Event/Activity: Nomadic Resident, Candice Breitz, “From A to B and back again”

Date and Time: Sep 17th 2013  3:10pm in class and 6:30pm at auditorium.

Short Description:
I am a huge fan of Candice’s work, the way she uses all the available pop culture documents to say what she wants to say. Her talk was amongst the best I have been to this year and her work is also my favorite. Her work around “Mother and father” is smart, as she pulls out all this context and content from movies and pop culture that surrounds us everywhere.
Her twin interviews are extremely deep, yet surprisingly very very entertaining.

Event/Activity Effects, Impacts, Inspiration! (point form précis)
1) having a light hearted approach to big presentations is great. She is such a great public speaker
2) how her artwork fits in different countries, continents, topics and content.
3) some artworks take so much planning, others just happen on the spot. “ the India example”
4) having a partner who rocks in editing is a plus!!
5) just having fun and enjoying what she does is refreshing and nice to see.

Direct Outcomes of this Event/Activity (point form précis)
I was very impressed by the way Candice deals with all the available material to work with, its there its available and she just takes chunks of it and fits it perfectly in a new conversation and new context that work perfectly with what she wants to say. Her mom, dad, Bollywood young actors, and school kids. Are amazing ways she used footage to make her own scenario. The twin series is shocking, emotional, entertaining and fun to watch. Her bable series is just extremely smart! I absolutely love her work. she works with pop culture of the Americas and occasionally plays with Asian culture. i wish I could see how middle eastern work would influence her.
